The Overview Project, an open-source document mining system, is looking for a front end developer

Overview is designed to quickly sift through large sets of disorganized documents — thousands or hundreds of thousands of pages. The software analyzes the full text of each document using natural language processing techniques, automatically sorts documents into topics and sub-topics, and visualizes their content. It has been used to report on emails, declassified archives, tweets, and more. There is no faster way to understand what’s in those 10,000 pages you got back from a FOIA request, or those 100,000 tweets you painstakingly captured.

Unlike a search engine, Overview helps you find what you don’t even know you’re looking for. Overview is a project of the Associated Press, funded by a Knight News Challenge grant. The system is in beta at www.overviewproject.org.

We need an additional front-end developer on the team. Overview is written in Scala on the Play framework, with a Coffeescript front end. We’re looking for:

– Solid JavaScript engineering experience, with frameworks such as jQuery, Coffeescript, and Backbone – Experience with a modern MVC web app architecture, such as Rails, Django, or Play – Familiarity with open source development; both the tools (e.g. Github) and the culture – Design and usability sense; we have a designer, but you’ll still be making many decisions at the intersection of beauty and function. – An understanding of web application architecture, including server operation and SQL database design – Experience in visualization, natural language processing, or distributed systems a plus.

Perks include travel to data journalism conferences and flexible working arrangements. New York City area preferred, but will consider remote.

But mostly, we’re looking for someone who wants to build something they care about. Open data is great, but transparency means nothing if no one is watching. Our goal is to make it easy and cheap to sort through large volumes of unstructured text.

There are cross-platform client, server, and mobile (Android) components of the Java-based Martus software. Our field staff have trained hundreds of groups and individuals, in over 40 countries, on how to use Martus to help capture these stories of abuse so that advocates and activists have the documentation that is often necessary to pursue reform, seek justice and begin reconciliation.

The position requires a solid foundation in managing cross-functional projects and working in a technical, small company environment. Our ideal candidate will combine a passion for human rights and tech with a penchant for tracking details and the ability to lead a talented team and diverse set of partners to successful realization of our plans.

This position is full time, and based in Palo Alto, California, with occasional domestic travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

– Manage a multi-year, multiple million dollar, federally funded project within the Human Rights Program, anchored by the Martus software. The project includes both software development (to add visualization and mapping to the Martus Client software, UI/UX enhancements, deployment of Mobile Martus for Android, translation updates, and integration with other digital security tools) and international training (including training of trainer) components. – Coordinate deliverables of Benetech’s software and field teams, as well as those of our technical and training project implementation partners. – Manage funder program officer relationship and reporting. – Work closely with Human Rights Program Vice President and Product Director to achieve goals for the project, identify and resolve issues, and manage project resources. – Create project plans and budgets, and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs. – Manage and communicate changing priorities, timelines, risk assessment, and internal and external project expectations. – Track progress against grant objectives and communicate status to Senior Management and Fundraising Teams. – Schedule and facilitate internal and external project meetings. – Provide Martus product management support, which may include tracking partner/user requirements, assisting with feature prioritization, authoring/revising product documents, and outreach and communications for releases.

Qualifications

You can design and manage databases holding large data volumes that grow fast. You can design indexing and caching solutions to enable fast search of large data volumes. You understand the challenges of working with Chinese-language data. You have a good overview of different open source solutions and their strengths and weaknesses.

Our project is adding tens of thousands of new records daily from various sources. Users need to be able to search these in a freetext way and also including some flags. All content is in Chinese.

We are currently using MySQL and custom indexing techniques. We need a better approach that can deal with larger data volumes (tens of millions of records, eventually more) and enable fast and accurate search of these. We may or may not continue to use MySQL depending on your advice.

Jean Camp, Professor
I am a Professor in the department of Informatics. My core interests
are the economics and behavioral components of security and privacy in
commerce and government. It was this interest that led me from
graduate electrical engineering research in North Carolina to the
Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon, and it
remained my core interests as a Senior Member of the Technical Staff
at Sandia National Laboratories. At Sandia National Laboratories I
focused on computer security. I left Sandia National Laboratories for
Harvard’s Kennedy School. As a tenured Professor in Informatics I
research the social informatics of security. The developer would
report to me.

Minaxi Gupta, Associate Professor
Minaxi Gupta is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer
Science at IUB. She received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Georgia
Tech in 2004. She has interned at Motorola, IBM, T. J. Watson, and
Hewlett Packard labs and has completed one-third of the course work
for an M.B.A in Finance from Dupree College of Management at Georgia
Tech. Her primary research interests are in computer networks. She is
interested in designing the next generation Internet services,
protocols, and security measures driven by a real-world
characterization of Internet usage by a variety of scientific and
non-scientific user-communities that rely on diverse applications and
physical technologies.

Raquel Hill, Associate Professor
Raquel Hill earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from the
Georgia Institute of Technology in 1991 and 1993 respectively. From
1993 to 1996, she was a Member of Scientific Staff at Nortel Networks
in RTP, North Carolina. In November, 2002, she received a Ph.D. in
Computer Science from Harvard University. Dr. Hill was a Lecturer in
the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech from
November 2002 to August 2003. From August 2003 to July 2005, she was a
Post Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign, with a joint appointment with the Department of
Computer Science and the National Center for Super Computing
Applications (NCSA). Dr. Hill’s research interests include developing
security protocols and mechanisms for wired and wireless
infrastructures. She has specific interests in developing security
mechanisms that leverage the use of context in environments where the
context may change frequently, (i.e. pervasive computing
environments).

Steven Myers, Associate Professor
Steve Myers received his PhD in Computer Science from the University
of Toronto in 2005 for his work on cryptography under the supervision
of Charles Rackoff. He interned at the Mathematical Research Division
of Telcordia Technologies and developed and implemented technology for
Echoworx Corp., a Web-security based start-up company. He has been at
Indiana University, Bloomington since August of 2004, where he is an
Assistant Professor in the School of Informatics, and an Adjunct
Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science. Dr. Myer’s
interests include cryptography, systems security. In particular he has
interests in the development of block-ciphers and their theoretical
foundations, public-key cryptographic primitives and secure
multi-party computing. In the areas of systems security he has
interest in the prevention of phishing, digital fraud, viruses and
malware. He is the author of many articles and several book chapters
relating to cryptography and phishing, and, along with Markus
Jakobsson, is the editor of the book “Phishing and Countermeasures” by
Wiley Press.

XiaoFeng Wang, Assistant Professor
XiaoFeng Wang received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Carnegie
Mellon University in 2004. He joined Indiana University at Bloomington
as an assistant professor in 2004. Dr. Wang’s research interests span
all areas of computer and communication security. In particular, he is
carrying out active research on massive cyber attacks (malware and
denial of service), privacy (theory and applications of anonymity
systems) and incentive engineering.

Apu Kapadia, Assistant Professor
Ap Kapadia’s research is mainly in the area of privacy-enhancing
technologies. Specifically, he has been actively working on i)
techniques that facilitate anonymous access to online services but
still with some degree of accountability, and ii) usable mechanisms

Stanford University Libraries (SUL) is building an increasingly rich and complex set of geospatial information services and resources to support research, teaching and learning.

The Web Mapping Engineer for Geographic Information Systems will lead the technical effort to identify, develop, and support the user-facing GIS applications for SUL’s GIS programs, resources and patrons, as well as providing secondary support for SUL’s spatial data infrastructure. This position will sit within and report to Digital Library Systems and Services (DLSS) unit within SUL, and work intimately with and directly support the programmatic activities of the Branner Earth Sciences Library, as well as closely related units within SUL and beyond.

This is a fixed-term position, with a four year term.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Web Mapping Engineer for Geographic Information Systems will lead the technical effort to identify, develop, and support the user-facing GIS applications for SUL’s GIS programs, resources and patrons, as well as providing secondary support for SUL’s spatial data infrastructure.

Web Application Support (60%)
• Adopt, adapt, develop and maintain software to provide a Web-based geospatial discovery and access portal, using open source technologies in an inter-institutional, community-based, development effort.
• Integrate digital mapping and GIS data discovery into a GIS discovery portal and/or SearchWorks, SUL’s overarching discovery layer.
• Integrate (either directly or by supporting integration efforts of others on campus) additional services into SUL’s GIS environment, supporting mapping and georeferencing applications, novel spatial visualization tools, mashups, and integration of gazetteers and third party GIS-based API’s.

Systems Analysis, Architecture Design, Implementation, and Administration (30%)
• Contribute to identify SUL’s information systems needs concerning geospatial data. Design and implement systems to manage, preserve, search, and make SUL’s geospatial data discoverable and usable.
• Contribute to implement and manage SUL’s GIS infrastructure; this includes administration of specialized GIS applications including GeoServer, GeoNetwork, ArcGIS Server, and Open GeoPortal Rails (http://github.com/sul-dlss/ogp-rails)
• Adopt and adapt software for the import, management and remediation of Stanford’s GIS data collections
• Work with SUL’s server, database and network administrators to provision the necessary computing systems to support GIS services, including ESRI components in GIS labs.

Community Participation, Leadership and Consulting (10%)
• Play an active role in higher education and GIS researcher community; represent Stanford in this community and the development of open source and consortial service efforts. Consult with technologists on campus about the best method to realize their projects’ GIS technical goals, and adapt SUL’s GIS services and infrastructure accordingly.

Demonstrated Expertise Required In:

• GIS applications, tools and resources through at least three years of hands-on management and development in a GIS environment. Familiarity includes direct experience with both raster and vector resources, geodatabase configuration and management, and common API’s and tools (ArcSDE, ArcGIS Server, GeoServer, OpenLayers, OGC standards, Google Earth APIs etc.).
• Software engineering in Web-, solr-lucene and database-backed application environments, and experience in contributing to and/or defining the technical architecture of complex systems.
• Ruby, and Ruby on Rails, both for application development and in engineering an enhanced framework, including plug-ins, engines and gems, for developing and deploying applications. Experience with other MVC frameworks or dynamic languages will be considered.
• Scripting technologies such as Perl, PHP, Python, etc., or a demonstrated ability to learn them quickly. In-depth knowledge of HTML and related website development technologies and software (especially CSS and AJAX). Familiarity with Java and object-oriented programming and concepts is desired.

We are looking for a part-time technical writer to work with the team on producing end-user documentation for both internal and external customers of these tools. These tools currently include:

EventLogging: a platform for modelling and measuring how readers and editors interact with our sites
User Metrics API: a tool to support cohort analysis via a standard set of user participation metrics

Scope of Work

Your primary responsibilities may include:

Writing the first version of the end-user documentation for EventLogging, including tutorials on:
- How to set up a new data collection job
- Schema design
- Data collection and data validation
- Event monitoring
- Basic analysis of log data
Building an initial repository of schema patterns for data modellers
Collecting and documenting existing best practices for the creation of new schemas
Helping drive the definition of new best practices by consulting with the relevant stakeholders
Writing the first version of the end-user documentation for the User Metrics API, including tutorials on:
- New cohort definition and metric selection
- Use of API parameters and aggregators
- Understanding the JSON response

We expect the technical documentation writer to attend weekly check-ins (remotely or in person) with the product owners and other stakeholders as needed.

All contents and documentation produced as part of this contract will be hosted on mediawiki.org and released under a Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike 3.0 unported license.

The contract will commence on February 1, 2013 for a duration of 5 months. The contract will end on June 30, 2013 unless it is extended.

The Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to the growth, development and distribution of free, multilingual content, and to providing the full content of these wiki-based projects to the public free of charge. The Wikimedia Foundation operates some of the largest collaboratively edited reference projects in the world, including Wikipedia, a top-ten internet property.

Statement of Purpose

The Technical Operations team of the Wikimedia Foundation is embarking on a new project to build a flexible and scalable lab infrastructure for our community and volunteers, to support their effort to prototype, develop, test and deploy their tools and extensions. Some of the uses of the Wikimedia Labs infrastructure are for:

Deployment of volunteer-created tools which are independent of MediaWiki, e.g. edit counters, mentoring database, geographic information about articles etc. (essentially the kind of things currently running on the Toolserver)
Prototyping and staging of WMF-developed MediaWiki code
Prototyping and staging of volunteer or chapter-developed MediaWiki code
Development and deployment of new site architecture by staff and volunteers in a code-reviewed, devops-oriented environment
Access for researchers (WMF or external) to live database replication or large datasets, as well as computing resources, for the purpose of running analyses
Serving as an execution and hosting space for bots, so that bots can be more systematically developed and tracked

Two full-time Wikimedia Foundation operations engineers are currently building Wikimedia Labs.

Scope of Work

Wikimedia is looking for a contractor whose primary focus will be to assist the community developers to migrate their tools to this new Labs infrastructure, especially those residing in Toolserver today. In addition, this person will:

Support enhancement and perform operational duties of the Labs Virtualization Project using OpenStack and LAMP-stack technology. Duties include developing, deploying and supporting tools to provision and manage large networks of virtual machines, creating a redundant and scalable cloud computing platform
Set up monitoring systems
Provide system and database administration duties for the Labs environment

Outcome and Performance Standards

You are expected to work about 40 hours a week, on average. During these (flexible) hours you are required to be available online for collaboration with the (international) Foundation team. Outside these hours, you may incidentally be contacted for emergencies (e.g. during system outages). You will report to the Director of Operations, and will work closely with Operations staff, the Engineering Community Team, and the Toolserver community. Besides maintaining regular communication with your point of contact, you may need to participate in bi-weekly online Operations meetings with the rest of the team. There will be milestone check-ins with the Foundation to discuss progress and activities. You must be willing to travel occasionally for international meetings, as well as to perform your duties.

Term of Contract

Your initial contract will be for a duration of 6 months, and will commence as soon as possible. Renegotiation at the termination of the contract is optional.

Payments, Incentives, and Penalties

Rate will be determined by level of experience and expertise.

Contractual Terms and Conditions and Required Qualifications

Respondent parties are expected to:

Have 5+ years of hands-on and strong knowledge of LAMP-stack system administration
Be competent in programming and scripting languages like PHP, Python and bash
Be able to work independently where needed, and work remotely as part of a globally distributed team
Be comfortable in a highly collaborative, consensus-oriented environment
Be a proficient speaker in the English language

Furthermore:

Prior work experience in creating provisioning tools is a plus
Prior work experience integrating different types of services together, e.g., LDAP, Puppet and MediaWiki is a plus
Experience with virtualization technologies such as OpenStack or Ganeti is a plus
Experience with clustered filesystems such as GlusterFS or Swift is a plus
Experience with high-traffic web site operations is a plus
Experience with MySQL database administration is a plus
Experience with the Solaris UNIX operating system and Sun Grid Engine is a plus
Understanding of the free culture movement, especially Wikimedia, is a plus

The ideal candidate will be creative, highly motivated, and able to operate effectively in multiple cultural contexts.

We are looking for exceptional engineers who like to bridge development and operations to support Wikimedia’s technical team in building transformative improvements to the functionality and user experience on Wikipedia and our other sites, while maintaining high site reliability and performance.

Responsibilities

Improve automation, tooling and processes to support development and deployment
Form deep partnership with engineering teams to work on improving user site experience

Your Background
