In 2004, volunteer Wikipedia activists founded the non-profit association Wikimedia Deutschland in Berlin, which now consists of over 100,000 members and 160 full-time staff.

Free knowledge leads to a fairer world. Wikipedia is the most important online knowledge collection of our time. The German Wikipedia alone records almost 1 billion page views per month for a total of 2.6 million articles. We – Wikimedia Deutschland e. V. – support the volunteers of Wikipedia and its sister projects, develop free software, such as Wikidata, and advocate for free access to knowledge, the opening of education and research, and more common good orientation in data policy.

For our Team Wikibase Product Platform, based in Berlin, we are looking for a permanent Junior Software Engineer (m/f/d), full-time or part-time (min. 30h/week), as soon as possible.

About the position & the team:
You will be working with the team that develops and improves the software platform that serves as a base to the Wikidata project and the Wikibase Ecosystem of interconnected knowledge graphs. You will be developing open source software that puts user needs first and increases our users’ satisfaction. At Wikimedia Deutschland we work towards a future in which people share the power to collect and organize the data that shapes humanity’s understanding of the world.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Build and maintain the functionality of the Wikibase Product Platform
  • Collaborating with the team on finding the best solution to users problems.
  • For example, that team has recently been working on a new RESTful API providing the ability to access and modify data, as well as the fundamental data editing UI.
  • Work in an agile work environment
  • Write readable, testable, sustainable, and efficient code
  • Participate in all the stages of software development including code, design, and architectural reviews providing constructive feedback
  • Engage in constantly improving the team processes and agile practices.
