Technical Project Manager Full-time

The Calyx Institute, a 501©(3) nonprofit organization advancing human rights and freedoms by creating and deploying free and open source privacy technologies, is seeking a Project Manager with management experience to help coordinate several of our project teams.

The ideal candidate has experience with the architecture of developing complex software products. The Calyx Institute works collaboratively on projects with a diverse, global community. We work hard to choose communications tools that encourage participation, where every contributor is heard and respected. The person in this job must be a team player with excellent communication skills.

The primary focus of this Project Manager role (initially) is the management of the CalyxOS project and bootstrapping the CalyxVPN project. This includes developing roadmaps/milestones, gauging/tracking team capacity with workload concerns, and ensuring timely completion of project deliverables. Both of these projects will require coordination with outside/upstream groups and flexibility with what may initially be “moving target deliverables”. More software projects (have ideas?) will be brought into the pipeline over time in coordination with team leads and other project managers.

This person will be responsible for ensuring a productive, healthy work environment so relevant team members are able to contribute effectively and to the best of their abilities. Teams are distributed globally across multiple time zones, so the ability to organize and communicate asynchronously via chat platforms, email, Gitlab tickets, etc. is crucial.

This person must have strong organizational skills and the ability to communicate in writing to diverse audiences. All while helping teams roadmap, identify areas for project expansion or alignment, supporting team leads on the execution of projects, and writing progress reports to highlight growth and success. This position reports to the Engineering Director.

The ideal candidate will be energetic, unflappable and flexible, and will thrive in a highly-technical collaborative environment.

This is a full-time, remote position. Annual salary for this position is negotiable, with a target compensation range of $120,000 to $140,000 USD. The expected duration of this engagement is one year, with a possibility of extension or conversion to a permanent position.

Responsibilities:

  • Roadmap: Work with team leads to calculate estimation for tasks on roadmap. Provide instruction to teams where needed and point them in the right direction; help them understand what is expected of them
  • Coordinate the transfer of information to and between the project teams, stake-holders, and greater Calyx community
  • Organize project meetings, help your teams plan their roadmaps, and show the teams how to improve their processes
  • Work with other project managers and directors to coordinate contingencies within other teams roadmaps
  • Work on grant proposals by providing your teams ideas for projects and the personnel needed for execution
  • Manage risks and issues that might occur while executing a project
  • Oversee roadmap execution and monitor each teams progress on their respective projects

Qualifications:

  • Solid background in managing projects
  • Super organized with excellent attention to detail
  • Knowledge of how to build great processes, no matter what tools the teams are using
  • Great facilitator
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate with many different audiences
  • Knowledge of and experience with software development life-cycle process
  • Android Open Source Project experience is a plus!
  • L3/L4 Networking and protocol experience is a plus!
  • Experience with Free and Open Source Software culture
  • Comfortable with transparency
  • General knowledge of Internet technologies and security tools
  • Openness to possibly travel for work events on occasion
  • Four-year degree in an operations or technical field (operations management, engineering, maths, sciences, etc.)
  • Graduate degrees and certifications are a plus!
  • 5+ years professional experience in similar roles, ideally some of that experience is in software development or systems administration (DevOps, etc.)
