LRMI Project Manager

We are looking for a Project Manager to lead the Learning Resources Metadata Initiative (LRMI), a project co-led by Creative Commons and the Association of Educational Publishers to build a common metadata vocabulary for educational resources.

The LRMI Project Manager is a full time position reporting to CC’s Director of Global Learning and works closely with the Education and Technology teams, as well as with policy and legal staff.

Purpose of Job

The LRMI Project Manager will provide general oversight of the internal project staff and subcontractors, and ensure LRMI work plans are clearly articulated and timelines adhered to. This position:

project manages all CC LRMI grants and deliverables;
serves as the primary contact for all LRMI subcontractors and external stakeholders;
leads the LRMI technical working group listserv and meetings;
liaises with open communities, OER repositories / referatories, institutions, standards bodies, and vendors that are integrating LRMI and/or increasing the value of CC’s legal and technology tools;
is the key player in CC’s outreach to open education organizations and broadening awareness about LRMI and CC among states and school districts;
represents LRMI and CC at private meetings and selected conferences and events;
reports progress on the project to CC, the open community and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and
serves as an education expert on technology aspects of CC internally and externally.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Manage the day-to-day operations and activities of the LRMI project.
Develop LRMI project schedules and processes to ensure community satisfaction, project continuity and timely delivery of project outcomes.
Work with schema.org (Google, Bing and Yahoo) to formally adopt LRMI and integrate LRMI into their search engine interfaces.
Work with the Director of Global learning to get states and school districts to understand the value of requiring LRMI marked content in their RFPs and other procurement processes.
Sort out the long-term plan for the technical working group and overall governance of the LRMI specification and advocacy.
Partner with AEP to ensure the educational assets we deliver for LRMI are top notch and make sense to lay and technical types alike.
Provide ongoing liaising and expertise to organizations implementing or considering CC tools (especially LRMI), including educational, government and gallery, library, archive and museum institutions.
Develop (via meetings, other communications, and preparation of materials) key potential LRMI adopters and supporters as requested.
Represent CC at / liaise with strategically high impact conferences and other events.
Assist the Director of Global Learning with other duties as assigned, including the Department of Labor “OPEN” project, the School of Open and the Open Policy Network.

Skill Requirements

Expertise and interest in connecting Creative Commons issues intelligently, coherently, and in scope with our mission with regard to copyright and related technology policy issues (including LRMI).
Thorough understanding of open licensing, open education and the importance of meta-data.
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including listening, public speaking, research, writing and editing skills.
Excellent analytical and project planning capabilities.
Direct experience with project management tools.
Expertise in supporting software engineering and integration processes, including issue management, debugging, scripting.
Understanding of software and data integration technologies, including HTML, metadata, RDF, and XML, and ability to interface between domain experts, policy makers, and engineers regarding such technologies.
Independent and self-motivated worker, able to work with limited day-to-day oversight and supervision.
Ability to attend to detail, master technical information, establish priorities, manage multiple projects, and drive extended projects to successful completion.
Highest level of ethics and integrity in professional matters.
Demonstrated ability to generate respect and trust from staff and internal / external partners.
High proficiency in online content publication, including wikis.
Fluent in English; second language competency a plus.

Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors in relevant field, e.g. education / computer / information science. Masters preferred.
Experience in technology and technology policy coordination, community outreach, open evangelism, business development.
Experience in writing and research for policy, institutional, and other professional audiences.
Experience contributing to open source, open education, open licensing, open standards, and / or other open content projects.
An established history of writing and presenting in higher education forums on issues relevant to open projects.

Work Environment

Collaborative, community-building atmosphere grounded in an environment of mutual respect and trust. The facility is an open pod setting in downtown Mountain View, California, easily accessible via car and public transportation. Amenities include a communal kitchen, free parking, laptop/desktop computer, and ergonomically conscious office supplies and space provided. Travel, as needed (including possible international). This position may work out of CC’s Mountain View office and/or in another location with the permission of the Supervisor.
