We’re searching for a dedicated part-time designer who will play a leading role in enhancing the usability of OpenRefine. The Tor Project, Inc., a 501©(3) nonprofit organization advancing human rights and freedoms by creating and deploying free and open source anonymity and privacy technologies, is seeking a Product Designer to be a part of the User Experience & Design (UX) Team.

This position will be an integral part of a small, “full stack” design team, encompassing the disciplines of UX design, ethical user research, and brand design. The team coordinates both synchronously and asynchronously via IRC, email, gitlab, and some voice meetings. A personal commitment to free and open source software, good communication and documentation skills, and passion for contributing to the greater good are all essential. This position will also require occasional international travel.

In this role, you will:

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) sits at the nexus of participatory mapping, community-led development, humanitarian response, open data and tech. About the Role

The Open Mapping Hub – Eastern & Southern Africa is looking for an executor; responsible for managing all efforts that develop, engage and grow a diverse community of mappers and contributors. Areas of support include, and are not limited to the following: strategic planning, grant and award management; fostering social innovation including but not limited to new ways of working with communities and partners to grow OSM contributors and expand the scope of OSM data sets.

The Innovation Engagement Specialist establishes and maintains relationships with various types of communities and partners, including internal stakeholders, to oversee projects through conception, deliverables and reporting phases, ensuring high quality deliverables. Reporting to the Regional Director – Eastern & Southern Africa, The Innovation Engagement specialist will collaborate and work closely with the Data Quality, GIS teams to engage and deliver value to OSM mappers, map users and map supporters in the region. The candidate will be responsible for bringing together the problems, needs and requirements of communities across the region in a way that grows and evolves HOT’s technology in a way that builds equity, increases accessibility and influences the design and development of transformative open mapping innovation.

Responsibilities

Operational

Build and manage relationships with mappers in priority countries in the ESA region with a goal of identifying and catalyzing strategic opportunities to develop and support initiatives that align with the Hub’s core programs.
Co-design, nurture and and manage the pipeline process to grow mappers within the ESA Community Network
Build and execute a pipeline of projects that present new opportunities for OSM data, tools and processes and/or demonstrate impact, including project design, business model development and operational support
On-going management of in-country initiatives. This may include organizing and facilitating workshops, project management and relationship management across wide range of partners (e.g. OSM Communities, start-ups, social enterprises)
Develop and launch program areas and functions to facilitate interaction between mappers, map users and map supporters such as joint supporter events, projects, working groups and communities of practice
Support and convene annual/quarterly open mapping communities meetings
Provide support to grant and award recipients in the region and collaborate with ESA Hub team to support the success of overall portfolio
Contribute to the Hubs learning agenda by supporting the production of high quality communication and engagement materials which capture lessons and insights from hub programs
Ensure appropriate coordination of ESA hub regional efforts with relevant internal and external partners
Build the capacity of regional communities, teams and individuals in open mapping technology, design thinking, agile mindset and human centered open innovation.
Facilitate localized design thinking processes to increase regional representation in open mapping tech
Coordinate with Hub Data quality and GIS leads in providing support to communities and partners, including developing and implementing processes to ensure the delivery of consistent quality support for projects and tracking of data for use in programming

Strategy

Research, identify and pursue relationships based on hub priorities and strategic opportunities
Develop relationships with stakeholders in key geographic areas and actors both strengthening ESA Hub position and credibility within the innovation/open map data ecosystem
Work with Regional Director to provide systematic and standardized approaches to meet community/partner needs
Work with the Fundraising Development Specialist to develop proposals, including due diligence issues, budget and pricing, proposal writing, contract negotiations, and ongoing involvement in presentations to map supporters and stakeholders.
Ensure project deliverables are met in a timely fashion, adherence to tracking and reporting on status of all activities and projects

Qualifications

Previous work experience within the open source/open data ecosystem in Eastern & Southern Africa Region
Bachelor’s Degree in innovation & technology, business and marketing and/or communication management
At least 5 years of experience in social innovation design having developed innovation strategies and implementing new products/services in collaboration with start-ups or self organized community groups
Experience in project management
Entrepreneurial, startup or corporate innovation experience.
Demonstrated capabilities in client engagement – communication and facilitation skills
Proven expertise in Human Centered Design and Design Thinking methodologies
Broad understanding of open map data technologies, and their potential fields of application
Very strong communication, interpersonal, and facilitation skills; ability to express complex ideas in simple comprehensible language
Exceptional written and oral communication skills in English. Ability to write articles, blog posts, concept notes and reports with minimal review and supervision

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) sits at the nexus of participatory mapping, community-led development, humanitarian response, open data and tech. With a talented and diverse team spread around the globe, HOT is an NGO which supports a dynamic global community of thousands of dedicated volunteers using maps and open data for humanitarian response and the Sustainable Development Goals. Working with humanitarian and development partners like the Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières, UN agencies, governments and others, the HOT community maps in solidarity with those affected by or at risk of disaster, contributing the maps and data aid workers need to do their lifesaving work.

About the Role

We’re seeking a Senior Hybrid Designer-Developer that can quickly and effectively take products from concept to shipment. A person that is a senior professional across the two disciplines of Software Design and Development, ideally in Free and Open Software environments.
During design phases, capturing user insights and creating a collage of imaginative ideas and prototypes which can be realized through agile collaboration. During development phases, relying on experience in a variety of programming languages, databases to build and iteratively improve. We expect you to support a passionate team of humanitarian hacktivists. The role will support the HOT tech team in collaboratively delivering a range of open source solutions, aiming to build tech that enables the Human[itarian] use of OpenStreetMap. In this way, contributing to support HOTs mission to improve livelihoods through open mapping.

Responsibilities and Priority Areas for Action

Design:

Conceptualize ideas that bring simplicity and user friendliness to complex design challenges.
Facilitate inclusive design thinking processes including user research, discovery and product concept to imagine the HOT technology strategy into existence.
Collaborate with HOT’s global tech team and open source community to define, build, and release new, user-centered products.
Construct user flows, wireframes, and prototypes that effectively communicate design concepts for validation.
Develop and deliver well-documented, product designs that accurately reflect HOT’s mission.
Design products that are intentionally inclusive and equitable.

Develop:

Work with engineers, designers, and test engineers to bring prototypes to life
Participate in the overall application lifecycle with ownership of code throughout development, staging, testing and production.
Development tasks will focus on frontend development, designing and deploying services, integrations with and consumption of third party services, database development, unit testing and mock data generation, development of regression testing scenarios and scripts.
Our tool stack has applications built with a mix of Python and Javascript frameworks.
Follow best practices such as monitoring technical performance of applications to ensure code optimisations and troubleshoot and debug applications.
Build high-quality efficient, reusable code, focus on clean readable code, debugging and ensuring good test coverage.
Develop accessible documentation that increases contributor engagement and project sustainability.
Participate in agile software planning and development activities including daily standups, user story and task organization and grooming activities, and effort estimation.

Inspire:

Mentor and guide team members as well as internships, helping them develop and grow.
Collaborate with communities to design, build and maintain applications.
Communicate (blogs, presentations, working groups etc.) to raise visibility and engagement with hot_tech powered projects.
Participate & showcase work in yearly conferences and other community working group meetings on a regular basis.

Qualifications

Essential

Experience in Application Development, preferable in areas of Design and Development
5+ years experience with interaction design, user experience design, or similar field
5+ years experience in software development
A creative mind with a problem-solving attitude, driven by inclusion and equity
Proven track record delivering user-first, data driven solutions with a focus on getting things done
Have a collaborative, self-motivated, “always-learning” spirit, driven to improve user experiences everywhere at all times through smart design and applied effort
Be driven by compassion, humanitarian ethics, and a sense of humor
Open and encouraging communication
Working knowledge of agile teams or projects

Desirable

Experience working in a dynamic open source community across multiple stakeholder groups and with multiple concurrent projects
Experience with OpenStreetMap (OSM) and associated OSM tools Experience in working with NGOs

Priority Areas (first 6 months focus)

Design

Create development ready, high fidelity wireframes for the OSM Galaxy website (https://galaxy.hotosm.org/) integrating recent design sprint outputs.
The Galaxy site aims at representing map data quality and statistics so they can be used in decision making for more specifically HOT and our partners but open for anyone to use.
Review and improve the existing design process for Galaxy (later on for HOT Tech products in general).

Build

Review and improve existing codebase and ensure sufficient development documentation is in place for the community to contribute.
Implement a common design language system that works across different languages.
Implement wireframes for the UI of Galaxy.

Inspire

Contribute to the creative vision and implementation of the HOT technology strategy.
Mentor 1-2 employees on front-end development.

About this role

As the designer working with a small software development team, you will be responsible for improving the user experience of SecureDrop , an open source whistleblower submission system used by more than 70 news organizations world-wide. You will help us to address challenges at the intersection of UX, accessibility, and security:

Imagine you’re blowing the whistle on government abuse. How do you get in touch with a news organization? How do you stay safe and anonymous?

Imagine you’re a journalist receiving a stash of documents. How do you protect yourself against malware? How do you protect your source while examining these documents?

You’ll work on interaction design, visual design, prototyping, user research—all in close collaboration with the development team. While SecureDrop will be your focus, you will also partner with our web development team on improving our websites, including freedom.press and our second flagship project, the US Press Freedom Tracker.

You have…

3+ years of experience in a designer role as part of a team, or comparable experience, including:
- helping to take a product feature from concept to delivery and use
- breaking down design solutions into prioritized, shippable increments
- building and sharing design prototypes at different levels of fidelity and interactivity
- Comfort working as part of a fully distributed team
- At least 4 hours time zone overlap with US Pacific Time or US Eastern Time working hours for real-time collaboration

Working with us
