CCBV and its network of service partners offer specialized not-for-profit expertise to help improve the quality and maturity of free and open source (FOSS) projects. We complement their internal skillset, and allow these efforts to better scale and hopefully become self-sustainable as soon as possible. The services are intended for grantees of the NGI Zero programs and grantees of the wider NGI ecosystem.

We have an active relationship with NLnet foundation and with GÉANT, the pan-European data network for the research and education community. Through our participation in the NGI Zero programmes, we contribute to hundreds of free and libre projects working to establish a more healthy Next Generation Internet ecosystem. There’s a wide variety of digital commons efforts supported within NGI0, ranging from libre hardware and software, open standards, open data and much more. See: projects for an impression.

This is a freelance, part-time role with the amount of work depending on the number of requests for support services. As a technical writer, you will work closely with the project grantees (developers) requesting support. Your contribution to the FOSS community and ecosystem will be invaluable. The projects touch on many different layers of the internet with plenty of innovative ideas and geeky challenges. Below an overview of tasks:

You have a background in cryptography or a deep understanding of cryptographic techniques
Help grantees with their technical writing needs: review, edit, restructure or (re)write (existing) documentation
This could entail readme’s, manpages, technical/architecture documentation, specifications, white papers, etc.
Experience with FOSS tooling and familiarity with the FOSS ecosystem would be great

Depending on cryptographic expertise and skills you could also be tasked to advice grantees on or support with e.g. formal verification. If this is of interest as well, do let us know. Commons Caretakers functions as a liaison between grantees and our service providers. This means we’ll reach out if we have a project in need and connect you with the grantee. The projects receive 16 hours of support by default. More hours can be allocated based on the type of project, its impact and prospective uptake. The position’s job functions are rooted in a mix of external outreach,
project management, writing, substantive copy editing, as well as
contact database management and direct mail. Ideal candidates are
creative multitaskers that have at least one to three years of work
experience in copy editing, writing, outreach, and free software;
proficiency and comfort with professional writing and publications
preferred. They have a general interest and desire to continuously
develop knowledge of the technical, philosophical, and licensing
aspects of software freedom.

Because the FSF works globally and seeks to have our materials
distributed in as many languages as possible, multilingual candidates
will have an advantage. With our small staff of eleven, each person
makes a clear contribution. We work hard, but offer a humane and fun

This job is a union position. The salary is fixed at $64,168/year* and

As a Technical Writer at GitLab, you will be responsible for ensuring that the documentation for all of our products is clear, correct, comprehensive, and easy to use.

We are looking for great writers with strong technical proficiencies to help our users succeed with our rapidly evolving suite of DevOps tools.

What you’ll do in this role

Continuously improve the GitLab open source documentation in collaboration with engineers, product managers, and others.
Review and edit documentation for all new and enhanced features.
Help developers and other members of the community who have documentation-related questions.
Identify and address content gaps or the need for additional media such as diagrams or videos.
Participate in reviews and revamps of section or page content and structure.
Help review and triage incoming suggestions, corrections, and other content from the GitLab community.
Help create and review UI text, such as field labels and error messages, in our product.
Continuously improve the GitLab documentation site user experience in collaboration with UX, engineers, and other technical writers. These efforts might include the documentation site’s design, search, build process, feedback methods, SEO, visitor analytics, versioning, and other technical components.
Contribute to the improvement of team process and style.

Senior Technical Writers will:

Plan and complete large content initiatives, such as section reviews and revamps.
Plan and lead documentation site feature enhancement initiatives.
Work with UX Researchers and Product Designers to identify contextual content and documentation opportunities in the product.
Mentor newly hired technical writers.
Plan new cross-functional efforts.

You should apply if you have:

Experience working with a docs-as-code workflow (we use Git with GitLab).
Experience researching, planning, writing, and editing software documentation.
Excellent skills in grammar, minimalist documentation design, and effective information architecture.
Experience using the Linux shell and command-line Git.
General familiarity with one or more coding languages.
Excitement about our values of collaboration, results, efficiency, diversity, iteration, and transparency.
Ability to thrive in an environment where self-learning and self-service is encouraged and instilled as a part of our culture.
Experience with some of the following:
- DevOps tools and open-source software.
- A rapidly scaling start-up environment.
- Remote work, especially in collaboration with others across countries and time zones.

If applying to a Senior role, you should have:

Extensive experience working with a docs-as-code workflow.
Extensive experience as a technical writer.
Experience producing documentation for a variety of products and services.
Some experience planning and leading major initiatives, such as the launch of new documentation resources, large-scale documentation reviews and revamps, and cross-functional initiatives.
Experience establishing style guidelines and familiarity with documentation linting.
Curiosity about how software works and experience testing beta features.
Demonstrated use of data in evidenced-based decision making.

For Colorado residents: The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently $67,000 – $146,000 for Colorado residents only. Grade level and salary ranges are determined through interviews and a review of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant, equity with other team members, and alignment with market data. See more information on our benefits and equity. Sales roles are also eligible for incentive pay targeted at up to 100% of the offered base salary.
