Job Description

We are seeking a passionate, tech-savvy individual to act as a Community Engagement Leader for the OpenSSL project. The ideal candidate will be responsible for fostering and enhancing connections between various communities around OpenSSL, facilitating fruitful discussions, spreading awareness about the project, and driving engagement and contributions. An essential aspect of this role is alignment with our core values and mission, as we expect these principles to be reflected in your day-to-day professional activities. Beyond community engagement, this role also involves collecting and contributing valuable insights to the project’s roadmap, making it an integral part of the project’s continuous growth and improvement.

This is a remote position with travel required, approximately up to 15% of working time. Given the global nature of the project, we require flexibility in accommodating various time zones outside of conventional business hours, especially for weekly and daily meetings primarily held within the core hours of 7-11am UTC.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement: Actively participate in various online platforms and communities such as Twitter, Mastodon, LinkedIn, StackOverflow, Slashdot, Soylentnews, Hacker News, Lobste.rs, GitHub, and more. Promote OpenSSL and its related projects, initiatives and provide updates to these communities.
Liaison: Maintain healthy relationships with key stakeholders including sponsors, committers, premium support customers, active developers community, and major OS distributions.
Community Support: Assist users, issue reporters, and those who submit PRs, by coordinating with the technical team and providing necessary support and information.
Conference Representation: Represent OpenSSL at industry conferences and events, delivering presentations and engaging with attendees to increase project visibility and cultivate relationships.
Outreach: Reach out to large companies, potential sponsors and other entities who might benefit from using OpenSSL.
Content Creation: Collaborate with blogger-users and other individuals or entities who have written about OpenSSL, fostering a continuous stream of high-quality, relevant content.
Advocacy: Liaise with regulatory bodies to understand the impact of the proposed policies and regulation changes, as well as provide input to those bodies on behalf of OpenSSL and more broadly Open Source in general.
Feedback Collection: Gather and consolidate feedback and insights from the community to assist in future product development and enhancement.
Strategy Development: Assist us to develop content, messaging and communication strategies.

Requirements

A strong background in technology and a solid understanding of OpenSSL and similar technologies.
Experience in community management, public relations, or a related field.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Der Geschäftsbereich II – Richtlinien der Stadtpolitik / CIIO agiert kooperativ, koordinierend und steuert strategisch relevante Zukunftsthemen, Maßnahmen und Projekte innerhalb der Stadtverwaltung. Er umfasst die Funktionseinheiten Digitale Großstadt, Internationale Beziehungen und Großstadtentwicklung und besteht aus ca. 43 Mitarbeitenden.

Das „Memorandum zur Digitalisierung 2020 bis 2025“ verweist bereits auf die hohe Bedeutung von Open Source für die digitale Souveränität der Kommune, indem es fordert, wo möglich Open Source-Software (OSS) zu nutzen und die von der Verwaltung entwickelte oder zur Entwicklung beauftragte Software der Allgemeinheit zur Verfügung zu stellen. Eine Potenzialanalyse zur Anwendung von Open Source in der Stadtverwaltung Dortmund (Untersuchung der Potenziale von freier Software und offenen Standards) wurde den politischen Gremien im 3. Quartal 2022 vorgelegt. Auf deren Basis soll eine Open Source-Strategie für die Stadt Dortmund abgeleitet werden, die anhand standardisierter Bewertungskriterien die Entscheidungsfindung für den Einsatz von Open Source-Software unterstützt und einen Fahrplan zur Sicherstellung der digitalen Souveränität enthält.

Im interdisziplinären Team sind Sie für die Entwicklung einer passgenauen Strategie unter den in Dortmund beschlossenen und gültigen Prämissen (Wirtschaftlichkeit, erforderliche Funktionalitäten (Pflichtenhefte), gesetzliche Vorgaben, Ergonomie, und Dortmunder Besonderheiten bzgl. Dienstanweisungen, Pers-Rat, etc.) zuständig. The Role

As we begin to prepare for the 2nd decade of Matrix and respond to the community’s rapid growth, the Foundation is seeking its first Managing Director to: (a) build support for the evolution of the ecosystem of service providers and software developers building technology and services on the Matrix protocol, (b) to oversee development and operations of key technology infrastructure and community resources, and © to help ensure the Foundation’s fiscal sustainability for the long term in order to provide stability and assurance to users and contributors.

The person in this role will also initially be responsible for taking over certain tasks from predecessor volunteers and outsourced providers, including such tasks as annual tax & reporting filings, maintenance of the Foundation’s online presence, and overseeing key community events/programs/activities (conferences, participation in standards groups, Google Summer of Code, etc.).
Requirements

The Foundation’s inaugural Managing Director will have an especially critical responsibility to design strategic plans, operational approaches, and help to build a culture that is aligned with the long-term goals of the Matrix community and to the extent possible supports its work in all its forms. You will not only need to build the plans for the future of the Foundation, you will also be responsible to raise funds to execute those plans, and then transform those plans into reality through building internal teams and ecosystem partnerships.

Your experience

First and foremost, we are looking for someone who is deeply passionate about the Matrix mission for democratising communication, and who will be an outspoken advocate for our work. We also need someone with not only deep experience in building organizations and communities, but also in organizational development work such as fundraising and partnership building. We expect the successful candidate to have the following experience:

* Past experience building a fundraising pipeline to support annual operating budgets. Based on the desired activities of the Foundation, our target annual budgets will be in the $4-5M range. * Existing access to a wide network of funding organizations and comfort making contact with new organizations to build relationships and solicit support. * Experience leading free and open source software projects. * Experience with implementing and supporting back-office technology such as project management tools, CRM (for members management) and fundraising campaign software.

Experience with software development practices (e.g. coding, QA, design, management) will help to understand the needs and challenges of Matrix contributors.

As the first official role directly serving the Foundation, we are opening this role as an independent contractor/consultant relationship in order to provide maximum flexibility in the early phase of the newly-energized organization. As is the case with most new organizations yet to name a leader, funding is currently limited but we will work to both provide flexibility to the right person, and to provide fair compensation that is competitive with other similar opportunities qualified candidates may have.

Depending on a candidate’s needs and situation, we may also be able to offer a direct hire relationship if needed. Because this role will be the first paid role in the organization, employee benefits are not yet established. However, once recurring funding is secured the Foundation’s current leadership is committed to a budget and building revenue sources that will accommodate a competitive benefits package for all employees, including retirement savings, allowances for workspace costs, paid leave, and healthcare benefits as necessary.
