Job Description

Your team will be comprised of technical developers, Internet and user experience researchers, as well as capacity building staff. You will be responsible for development, and maintenance of a web based management application for the dComms project. As a developer, you will help build a web interface for managing dComms tools, users, and the host system, with a focus on security, portability, and resiliency. Tasks will include:

Develop a portable and secure web application for managing dComms services, users, and the host system
Work with outside organizations for user experience and information security audits, integrating results into the product
Contribute to the dComms project code repositories to improve tooling and update dependencies
Write internal and external documentation
Give support and demos to end-users and partners

Requirements

You understand the building blocks of the Internet and are familiar with its core protocols. You value minimalism in application development, preferring to do things from scratch and without excessive external dependencies. You believe in test-drive development, prototyping, fine-tuning software configurations and performance monitoring as the primary ways to improve an Internet- reliant product or service. You have a depth of knowledge, experience and a passion for Internet technologies that allow you to learn new systems relatively quickly. Also, you should have:

Experience with Linux server administration
Understanding of core internet networking fundamentals
Proven experience writing tools the use the API of an OCI image compatible container orchestration tools (Docker, Podman, etc)
Backend software development a must. Preferably in a highly portable language like Go, but PHP, or Python also acceptable
Experience with frontend development
An engineering and security mindset
Experience working with Git (and Git hosting providers)
Devops experience a strong asset
An active appreciation for reading and writing documentation!

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Android engineer to contribute to two software products from the decentralized networking team: Ceno Browser and the eQsat Extractor applications. Ceno is a tool designed for content accessibility in some of the most repressive digital regimes, with a particular focus on areas under a network shutdown. It has been operationally deployed since 2020. The Android version is built from Mozilla’s Android Components and utilizes the Ouinet library to share web content peer-to-peer over an existing Distributed Hash Table (e.g. BitTorrent). eQsat is a satellite datacasting solution built to support the injection of new web content into isolated networks. Its client-side application extracts and decodes content received from the satellite stream, thereafter making it available on the local network to users of the Ceno Browser. It’s a modern day sneakernet serving thousands of users everyday!

Your primary duties will include

Implementing UI/UX improvements in the Ceno for Android application
Driving development of new features for the eQsat Extractor application
Maintaining privacy-preserving analytics suite to improve insight into our distributed network

Used by more than 70 news organizations worldwide, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and Al Jazeera, SecureDrop is composed of a variety of components:

SecureDrop Server: an anonymous whistleblowing system, deployed on hardened and Ansible-managed Ubuntu servers, hosting two web applications available as onion services over the Tor network.
SecureDrop Workstation: a platform built on top of Qubes OS to make SecureDrop faster and simpler for journalists to use. It consists of an Electron application and other services that span across a suite of SaltStack-provisioned, task-specific virtual machines.
SecureDrop Protocol: an end-to-end encrypted protocol designed specifically for whistleblowing systems, currently being implemented in Rust as the foundation for the next-generation SecureDrop Server.

The team is developing the next-generation SecureDrop Server, which provides end-to-end encryption while allowing for easier deployments compared with the current system. As part of the team, a successful candidate will have a key role in these efforts.

Responsibilities

Designing and specifying extensions to the SecureDrop end-to-end encryption protocol for new security properties or features (e.g., implementing abuse-resistance features).
Contributing to the formal modeling of the SecureDrop end-to-end encryption protocol.
Implementing client-side encryption for journalist and source communication.
Working with the rest of the team to integrate the protocol into the SecureDrop source and journalist workflows.
Performing code reviews for contributions from the development team and the larger SecureDrop community.

The FreeBSD Foundation is seeking a Graphics Stack Developer to contribute to our Laptop Support and Usability Project — a major initiative focused on enhancing the “out of the box” experience for FreeBSD users worldwide.

What You Will Do

You will work with a group of experienced developers on a range of laptop functionalities. The most important task will be to develop graphics drivers and hardware support to improve FreeBSD’s laptop compatibility. You will work on components of the desktop graphics stack, including Intel/AMD/NVIDIA drivers, Mesa, X11, and Wayland.

Your responsibilities will include:

Graphics: Driver development, vt(4) console integration, GPU compatibility.
Hardware Support: power management, device drivers.
Integration: Testing, documentation, and community engagement

What You Will Bring

Essential Qualifications

5+ years of experience with C programming
Proven expertise in kernel and device driver development
Experience with FreeBSD or Unix operating systems
Prior open source project contributions
Strong understanding of graphics subsystems (X11, Wayland, Mesa)
Experience in graphics driver development (DRM/KMS)
Solid hardware debugging skills and laptop hardware experience

Preferred Qualifications

FreeBSD committer experience

Contract and Work Model

Contract Duration: 12 months, full-time
Work Model: Fully remote, open to candidates in any country (except where restricted by U.S. sanctions)
Collaboration: A few virtual meetings per month, typically mornings U.S. Eastern Time, plus brief weekly and monthly written updates

Compensation

Competitive contract rate based on various factors relevant to the position and candidate, such as geographical location, candidate qualifications, relevant job-related work experience, education, and skillset.
