Job Description

Cloud Systems Engineers are responsible for the deployment and support of large edge and cloud-based use cases, pilot and POC systems and services. They work on complicated technical issues, resolving them promptly and efficiently. Their responsibilities include communicating with users, addressing their needs, troubleshooting, and providing step by step solutions.

Responsibilities

Experience required

Über dich

Keine Sorge: Du musst noch nicht alles perfekt können! Am wichtigsten ist uns, dass du eine gute Auffassungsgabe mitbringst und keine Angst davor hast, dich auch in komplexere, neue Themen einzuarbeiten.

Wir wünschen uns, dass du bereits Erfahrung mit Django oder ähnlichen Python-Frameworks (z.B. Flask) gesammelt hast. The Calyx Institute is seeking an experienced and skilled Android Platform Software Developer to join our CalyxOS team. As a key member of our team, you will contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of CalyxOS, a free and open-source software (FOSS) Android distribution. As part of our mission to provide secure, privacy-focused mobile solutions, you’ll play a key role in making sure that our software runs smoothly and is regularly updated. This role will report to the Technical Project Manager, and regularly coordinate with other CalyxOS team members and across other Calyx Institute program areas.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

- Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of CalyxOS – Implement security, privacy, and functionality improvements to CalyxOS – Level up the performance of CalyxOS features through identifying gaps in system design and developing solutions with team members – Troubleshoot and fix reported issues and bugs as needed – Uphold the integrity of privacy and security features by investigating, documenting, and fixing vulnerabilities in Android Open – Source Project (AOSP) and CalyxOS – Other duties as assigned

Key skills and competencies:

- Proficient in Android development, platform maintenance, and familiarity with AOSP – Strong problem-solving skills – Good team player with excellent communication skills – Self-directed and able to work in a remote-first, asynchronous, fast-paced, open-source development environment – Willingness to take ownership of work responsibilities – Organized with excellent attention to detail – Ability to communicate in spoken and written English

Preferred qualifications and experience:

- 3-5 years professional experience in similar roles – Familiarity and/or experience with FOSS and/or the internet freedom and digital rights ecosystem – Four-year degree (or equivalent) in relevant area of study – This is a full-time, salaried, exempt, remote position, requiring work authorization in the U.S. Calyx operates in the following states: Washington, Virginia, New York and Florida. Preference will be given to candidates residing in the states where Calyx operates, and occasional travel will be required. The salary range is $90,000-$95,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Additionally, Calyx operates on a four-day work week. This position is included in a union-represented collective bargaining unit (CWA Local 1101), and specific employment terms and conditions are subject to collective bargaining.

We are looking for a developer for the NewPipe app, especially to bring forward the refactor. Your main task would be to port UI components from XML to Jetpack Compose, while keeping an eye on style and usability of the interfaces, and to implement the business logic in Kotlin using view models, dependency injection, and other modern technologies. You would be working in close contact with other TeamNewPipe members and open pull requests to NewPipe (on the refactor branch), NewPlayer and NewPipeExtractor.
Requirements for the position:

Native Android development (Java or Kotlin)
Version control system (git)

Bonus points:

Modern Android development practices (Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Dependency Injection, etc.)
Contributed to open source projects in the past
Experience with ExoPlayer or video/audio formats
