This position is ideally full-time and US-based, but exceptions can be made for a qualified candidate.

The Systems Integration Administrator takes a role in planning and managing the Free Software Foundation’s systems deployment, interoperability, sustainability, and security strategies. This role reports to the Executive Director and works under the guidance of the Deputy Director, collaborating closely with the Senior Systems Administrator and GNU/Linux Systems Administrator. The Systems Integration Administrator is responsible for developing, maintaining, and guiding systems architecture, development of custom GNU/Linux operating system images, server setup and disaster recovery, and software deployment practices across FSF operations.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Acting as an important voice Foundation’s software system decision-making team;
Developing technical and strategic direction for fully free software systems automation, integration, and related initiatives;
Overseeing server maintenance, installation, large-scale disaster recovery, and operating system lifecycle management;
Conducting hands-on technical reviews and ensuring complete, well-documented operational decisions;
Adapting systems to FSF operations to ensure data integrity and minimal manual intervention;
Coordinating work of volunteer systems administrators

Candidate profile

This role is intended for someone with approximately 5 years of relevant professional experience and a strong technical background.

Deep hands-on proficiency in infrastructure automation, software security, disaster recovery, custom GNU/Linux operating system development, and enterprise software deployment is essential. The ideal candidate can work independently, manage complex projects involving multiple stakeholders, communicate technical ideas clearly, and produce thorough, well-maintained documentation. They understand how complex systems behave in international deployments, including data migration and recovery, and can evaluate whether systems remain secure, reproducible, and under organizational control even when working with incomplete information.

The role requires sound judgment in both urgent and long-term work: the Systems Integration Administrator should be able to participate in an on-call rotation, respond effectively under pressure when systems require attention, and then return to sustained projects that need careful planning, documentation, and follow-through.

Core technical skills

Practical experience with, and understanding of:

systems interoperability and architecture;
server migration and disaster recovery at international scale;
custom GNU/Linux operating system development and enterprise deployment practices;
free software principles and FSF technical guidance;

We are looking for an experienced Android engineer to contribute to two software products from the decentralized networking team: Ceno Browser and the eQsat Extractor applications. Ceno is a tool designed for content accessibility in some of the most repressive digital regimes, with a particular focus on areas under a network shutdown. It has been operationally deployed since 2020. The Android version is built from Mozilla’s Android Components and utilizes the Ouinet library to share web content peer-to-peer over an existing Distributed Hash Table (e.g. BitTorrent). eQsat is a satellite datacasting solution built to support the injection of new web content into isolated networks. Its client-side application extracts and decodes content received from the satellite stream, thereafter making it available on the local network to users of the Ceno Browser. It’s a modern day sneakernet serving thousands of users everyday!

This is a relatively fast-paced environment with a strong sense of individual contribution and close-knit project teams. We expect individuals to grow into their roles but also to make it their own.

Your primary duties will include

Implementing UI/UX improvements in the Ceno for Android application
Driving development of new features for the eQsat Extractor application
Maintaining privacy-preserving analytics suite to improve insight into our distributed network

About the Project

SecureDrop is an open source whistleblower submission system used by journalists to communicate with sources. Through its hardened architecture and the use of the Tor network, it offers whistleblowers strong security and anonymity protections. Used by more than 70 news organizations worldwide, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and Al Jazeera, SecureDrop is composed of a variety of components:

SecureDrop Server: an anonymous whistleblowing system, deployed on hardened and Ansible-managed Ubuntu servers, hosting two web applications available as onion services over the Tor network.
SecureDrop Workstation: a platform built on top of Qubes OS to make SecureDrop faster and simpler for journalists to use. It consists of an Electron application and other services that span across a suite of SaltStack-provisioned, task-specific virtual machines.
SecureDrop Protocol: an end-to-end encrypted protocol designed specifically for whistleblowing systems, currently being implemented in Rust as the foundation for the next-generation SecureDrop Server.

The team is developing the next-generation SecureDrop Server, which provides end-to-end encryption while allowing for easier deployments compared with the current system. As part of the team, a successful candidate will have a key role in these efforts.

Responsibilities

Designing and specifying extensions to the SecureDrop end-to-end encryption protocol for new security properties or features (e.g., implementing abuse-resistance features).
Contributing to the formal modeling of the SecureDrop end-to-end encryption protocol.
Implementing client-side encryption for journalist and source communication.
Working with the rest of the team to integrate the protocol into the SecureDrop source and journalist workflows.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a Program Manager to join the Sovereign Tech Fund team to contribute to the growth of the Sovereign Tech Agency.

You know how to manage complex projects and keep them on track, and you’re genuinely interested in open source and the communities that build it. Working closely with those communities and helping them succeed is a core part of this role.

We’re a small, cross-functional team that runs on modern collaboration tools and takes our processes seriously. We’re constantly refining how we work, and we want someone who sees that as an opportunity – someone who takes ownership, stays on top of the details, and can be relied on across multiple projects at once.

Your Tasks

Evaluating and assessing technologies for the Sovereign Tech Fund based on formal criteria
Actively participating in discussions regarding investment decisions
Communicating with open source projects and potential contractors
Drafting service contracts in consultation with the projects
Coordinating and managing projects before and during the commissioning process

Your Qualities

Extensive knowledge and experience in project management or grants management
Interest in the areas of open source, open source infrastructure, and software development
Business fluent in German, able, for example, to create written documents in German
Business fluent in English, to communicate with international partners and a multilingual team

What we offer

Based on experience and qualifications, the annual compensation for this role (at 40 hours per week) is 73,000 to 86,000 Euro aligned with the TVöD-Bund wage agreement for the public sector.

The Free Software Foundation (FSF), a Massachusetts 501©(3) charity with a worldwide mission to promote computer user freedom, seeks a motivated and talented individual to be our new Engineering and Certification Manager. This position is ideally full-time and US-based, but exceptions can be made for a qualified candidate.

The Engineering and Certification Manager reports to the executive director and takes a leadership role in managing and growing the FSF’s Respects Your Freedom (RYF) program. This role will work in close collaboration with FSF management and the technology and licensing teams. The Engineering and Certification Manager serves as a senior technical authority for the organization and is responsible for evaluating, certifying, and guiding hardware product submissions under the RYF certification requirements and other free hardware design initiatives.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Developing technical and strategic direction for the RYF program and related initiatives;
Developing and maintaining key relationships with vendors, community members, and partner organizations to support responsible growth of the FSF;
Overseeing the RYF device submission queue, including conducting hands-on technical reviews and ensuring complete, well-documented certification decisions;
Representing the organization through clear technical communication, public engagement, and collaboration with FSF teams; and
Performing additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Candidate profile

This role is intended for someone with approximately 7 to 10 years of relevant professional experience and a strong technical background. Deep hands-on proficiency in reverse engineering, firmware analysis, or low-level systems work is essential. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders, enjoys explaining technical ideas clearly in writing and in conversation, and is willing to engage publicly on behalf of the organization.

The ideal Engineering and Certification Manager is someone who understands how hardware systems actually behave in the real world. They have spent time examining devices beyond marketing claims: tracing the boot process, inspecting firmware, and identifying where user freedoms are limited or hindered. They are comfortable working with incomplete information and understand how to ask the right technical questions to evaluate whether the full software stack remains under the user’s control.

Practical experience with, and understanding of:

hardware architecture and systems;
firmware and boot processes;
reverse-engineering and analysis;
free software principles and FSF licensing guidance;
skill in managing a queue of issues and tasks without sacrificing technical depth;

The Algomus team (at CRIStAL, University of Lille) develops Dezrann (https://dezrann.net), an open-source full-stack web application (built in TypeScript, Vue, Node.js) for visualizing and annotating music scores in research and educational contexts.

As a full-stack web developer, you will:

Support and extend existing code in the Dezrann ecosystem.
Work on updating and improving components — for example, migrating to Vue 3.0.
Build new UI components to visualize musical structure (such as grid or tree views and repetition handling).
Improve software architecture, user interface design, and navigation/annotation functionality.
Implement features like real-time interaction (with socket.io), authentication/authorization (JWT), testing (TDD), and DevOps workflows (Docker, CI/CD).
Participate in maintenance and deployment work for the platform.
Communicate regularly with both project partners and Dezrann users — researchers, educators, and possibly international collaborators — including secondary school classes in the region.

The ideal candidate should have significant experience in full-stack web development (ideally 4–8 years), skills with Vue.js and TypeScript. knowledge of Node.js, human-computer interaction, software engineering practices, and continuous integration.
