This position is ideally full-time and US-based, but exceptions can be made for a qualified candidate.

The Systems Integration Administrator takes a role in planning and managing the Free Software Foundation’s systems deployment, interoperability, sustainability, and security strategies. This role reports to the Executive Director and works under the guidance of the Deputy Director, collaborating closely with the Senior Systems Administrator and GNU/Linux Systems Administrator. The Systems Integration Administrator is responsible for developing, maintaining, and guiding systems architecture, development of custom GNU/Linux operating system images, server setup and disaster recovery, and software deployment practices across FSF operations.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Acting as an important voice Foundation’s software system decision-making team;

Developing technical and strategic direction for fully free software systems automation, integration, and related initiatives;

Overseeing server maintenance, installation, large-scale disaster recovery, and operating system lifecycle management;

Conducting hands-on technical reviews and ensuring complete, well-documented operational decisions;

Adapting systems to FSF operations to ensure data integrity and minimal manual intervention;

Coordinating work of volunteer systems administrators

Performing additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor

Candidate profile

This role is intended for someone with approximately 5 years of relevant professional experience and a strong technical background.

Deep hands-on proficiency in infrastructure automation, software security, disaster recovery, custom GNU/Linux operating system development, and enterprise software deployment is essential. The ideal candidate can work independently, manage complex projects involving multiple stakeholders, communicate technical ideas clearly, and produce thorough, well-maintained documentation. They understand how complex systems behave in international deployments, including data migration and recovery, and can evaluate whether systems remain secure, reproducible, and under organizational control even when working with incomplete information.

The role requires sound judgment in both urgent and long-term work: the Systems Integration Administrator should be able to participate in an on-call rotation, respond effectively under pressure when systems require attention, and then return to sustained projects that need careful planning, documentation, and follow-through.

Core technical skills

Practical experience with, and understanding of:

systems interoperability and architecture;

server migration and disaster recovery at international scale;

custom GNU/Linux operating system development and enterprise deployment practices;

free software principles and FSF technical guidance;

skill in managing a queue of systems integration tasks;

comfort coordinating across organizational and technical teams; and,

ability to assess whether operating systems and software are buildable and/or reproducible using only free software tools

Location and working environment

The FSF is a fully remote organization. With our small staff, each person makes a clear contribution. We work hard but offer a humane work environment; existing staff get the first chance at any new job openings.

Candidates in the Boston, Massachusetts area are preferred, given the need for occasional access to FSF datacenter infrastructure.

Salary and benefits

This exempt, union position has a salary fixed at $81,369.60/year. From advances in material and climate science, to complex chemistry simulation for new drug design, quantum computers will help humanity solve some of its most important challenges. But without QEC, the industry’s defining technical challenge, such breakthroughs can never be achieved. Riverlane is the world leader in QEC technology. QEC is a complex problem that requires a range of skills, talent and passion.

Having raised more than $125M in funding to date to accelerate our cutting-edge R&D in quantum error correction (QEC), Riverlane partners with many of the world’s leading quantum hardware providers and government agencies to make fault-tolerant quantum computing a reality. We are making remarkable progress and growing fast.

About the role

At Riverlane, our mission is to make it possible for anyone to write and run fault-tolerant programs on a quantum computer. A key part of that mission is Deltakit, our open-source, user-facing platform for building, simulating and interpreting QEC experiments. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will own and lead the development of Deltakit, shaping its direction and ensuring it evolves to meet the needs of a growing and highly technical user community.

This role sits at the intersection of research and engineering. You will take cutting-edge ideas from the forefront of QEC and turn them into robust, intuitive software that researchers can rely on. Day to day, this means driving the design and delivery of new features, improving performance and usability, and ensuring the platform scales as adoption grows. You’ll play a key role in planning and prioritising the development roadmap, aligning technical delivery with research milestones, user needs, and broader organisational goals, as well as defining technical direction, making architectural decisions, and setting the standard for high-quality, well-engineered code.

You will also be closely connected to the people who use what we build. By engaging with researchers, engineers and the wider QEC community, you’ll help support adoption of Deltakit, understand how it’s being used in practice, and translate real-world feedback into meaningful improvements. You’ll also play a key role in planning and prioritising the development roadmap, aligning technical delivery with research milestones, user needs, and broader organisational goals. Through this, you’ll ensure the software not only reflects the latest research, but is accessible, reliable and impactful.

Riverlane operates at the forefront of a fast-moving and evolving field. You’ll work as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team where ideas are shared openly and learning is continuous. As priorities shift and the technology develops, you’ll help guide the platform forward through both technical leadership and thoughtful planning, bringing clarity, direction and momentum to complex challenges, and playing a central role in advancing Riverlane’s leadership in QEC software.

What you will do

Lead significant parts of both the internal and external software stack for error-corrected quantum computing systems

Turn internal tools into external and public ones. Own the complete software cycle process: design, development, testing, builds, workflows, releases

Mentor, guide and lead engineers in the team

Lead collaboration with other engineering teams to integrate their software and hardware artifacts with Deltakit

Engage with the community of users and researchers to identify needs and formulate adequate response

Contribute actively to open-source projects and lead the Deltakit open-source community

Organise and run workshops and tutorials for the community of users

What we need

We are considering a range of experience and are therefore advertising this role at different levels of seniority. Reporting to the engineering manager for SecureDrop, this position is a unique opportunity to be part of a small, primarily remote, and internationally distributed team that is making it possible for newsrooms to manage their most sensitive submissions, from the next big story about abuse of government power to the exposure of corruption at the local level.

This position will work alongside the other five engineers on the team contributing to the project. You can learn more about our team and colleagues here. As a team, we strive to provide an equitable and collaborative environment. We have strong expectations of mutual respect, kindness, and understanding, and we build those expectations into our work through processes like blameless retrospectives. We share responsibilities for tasks like code review and release management, and support each other in learning and professional development goals.

About the Project

SecureDrop is an open source whistleblower submission system used by journalists to communicate with sources. Through its hardened architecture and the use of the Tor network, it offers whistleblowers strong security and anonymity protections. Used by more than 70 news organizations worldwide, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and Al Jazeera, SecureDrop is composed of a variety of components:

SecureDrop Server: an anonymous whistleblowing system, deployed on hardened and Ansible-managed Ubuntu servers, hosting two web applications available as onion services over the Tor network.

SecureDrop Workstation: a platform built on top of Qubes OS to make SecureDrop faster and simpler for journalists to use. It consists of an Electron application and other services that span across a suite of SaltStack-provisioned, task-specific virtual machines.

SecureDrop Protocol: an end-to-end encrypted protocol designed specifically for whistleblowing systems, currently being implemented in Rust as the foundation for the next-generation SecureDrop Server.

The team is developing the next-generation SecureDrop Server, which provides end-to-end encryption while allowing for easier deployments compared with the current system. As part of the team, a successful candidate will have a key role in these efforts.

Responsibilities

Designing and specifying extensions to the SecureDrop end-to-end encryption protocol for new security properties or features (e.g., implementing abuse-resistance features).

Contributing to the formal modeling of the SecureDrop end-to-end encryption protocol.

Implementing client-side encryption for journalist and source communication.

Working with the rest of the team to integrate the protocol into the SecureDrop source and journalist workflows.

Performing code reviews for contributions from the development team and the larger SecureDrop community.

Testing the security properties of current and proposed functionality/architecture.

Working with external collaborators — for example, UX consultants during development of new features, or academic researchers studying SecureDrop or other privacy-enhancing technologies.

Taking turns on maintenance and release tasks with the rest of the team.

Other responsibilities as assigned by the SecureDrop engineering manager.

Qualifications

Must Have

One-plus years of substantial Rust experience, in production, research, or open source projects.

Either (a) five-plus years of full-time experience as a software engineer in a production environment, (b) a master’s degree with three-plus years of full-time experience as a software engineer in a production environment, or © a Ph.D. with one-plus year of substantial coding experience, plus some industry or open source software development experience.

Experience designing or implementing cryptographic protocols.

Strong written communication skills for protocol specifications and technical documentation.

Experience with Git, continuous integration, build automation, and test-driven development.

Experience working as part of collaborative team processes, including routine peer review of code contributions.

A passion for protecting the press freedom rights of all.

Preferred

Tell us in your cover letter if you have experience in one or more of the following areas:

Familiarity with formal modeling tools (Tamarin, ProVerif, or similar).

Interest in keeping up with the state-of-the-art in testing and verification techniques.

Experience with academic or industry cryptography research.

Experience with threat modeling, auditing, and vulnerability management.

Experience implementing cryptography in web environments.

Experience with Qubes, Tails, Tor, or other privacy/security technologies.

Contributions to open source software, especially cryptographic libraries or protocol implementations.

Experience developing technologies to support activist, journalist, or civil society communities.

Working with Us

This is a full-time role with a competitive nonprofit salary in the range of $120,000–$140,000, depending on experience.
Location: Germany
URL: https://www.sovereign.tech/jobs/program-manager

Description:

We’re looking for an experienced project lead or project manager to join the Sovereign Tech Fund – our flagship program for investing in critical technologies and digital sovereignty.

Who we are

The Sovereign Tech Agency is an organization dedicated to the digital sovereignty of the economy and society. Our mission is to strengthen the foundations of our digital autonomy and secure open digital technologies as the critical infrastructure of the 21st century.

Open digital infrastructure is the backbone of the digital world. It is essential for the flow of information, for government, for business, and for innovation, much like roads and bridges in the physical world. The most effective strategy for building this infrastructure is open source software: it is the bedrock on which our digital society is built – powerful, collaborative, and democratic.

With a commission from the German Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation, we invest in critical software components, develop programs, and create structures that sustainably strengthen the open source ecosystem, including the people behind the code.

Our work is unique: we are leading the way on how governments engage with open digital infrastructure and laying the groundwork for how modern societies ensure resilience, technological diversity, and public digital services.

Together, we are building Europe’s digital future – open, secure, and sovereign.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a Program Manager to join the Sovereign Tech Fund team to contribute to the growth of the Sovereign Tech Agency.

You know how to manage complex projects and keep them on track, and you’re genuinely interested in open source and the communities that build it. This position is ideally full-time and US-based, but exceptions can be made for a qualified candidate.

The Engineering and Certification Manager reports to the executive director and takes a leadership role in managing and growing the FSF’s Respects Your Freedom (RYF) program. This role will work in close collaboration with FSF management and the technology and licensing teams. The Engineering and Certification Manager serves as a senior technical authority for the organization and is responsible for evaluating, certifying, and guiding hardware product submissions under the RYF certification requirements and other free hardware design initiatives.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Developing technical and strategic direction for the RYF program and related initiatives;

Developing and maintaining key relationships with vendors, community members, and partner organizations to support responsible growth of the FSF;

Overseeing the RYF device submission queue, including conducting hands-on technical reviews and ensuring complete, well-documented certification decisions;

Representing the organization through clear technical communication, public engagement, and collaboration with FSF teams; and

Performing additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Candidate profile

This role is intended for someone with approximately 7 to 10 years of relevant professional experience and a strong technical background. Deep hands-on proficiency in reverse engineering, firmware analysis, or low-level systems work is essential. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders, enjoys explaining technical ideas clearly in writing and in conversation, and is willing to engage publicly on behalf of the organization.

The ideal Engineering and Certification Manager is someone who understands how hardware systems actually behave in the real world. They have spent time examining devices beyond marketing claims: tracing the boot process, inspecting firmware, and identifying where user freedoms are limited or hindered. They are comfortable working with incomplete information and understand how to ask the right technical questions to evaluate whether the full software stack remains under the user’s control.
h1. Core technical and program stewardship skills

Practical experience with, and understanding of:

hardware architecture and systems;

firmware and boot processes;

reverse-engineering and analysis;

free software principles and FSF licensing guidance;

skill in managing a queue of issues and tasks without sacrificing technical depth;

comfort coordinating across legal, licensing, and technical teams; and

ability to assess whether product software is buildable and/or reproducible using only free software tools:

Location and working environment

The FSF is a fully remote organization. With our small staff, each person makes a clear contribution. We work hard but offer a humane work environment; existing staff get the first chance at any new job openings.

Salary and benefits

This exempt, union position has a salary fixed at $83,034/year.
