[Part-time] Support Assistants and Translators at Tor Project

Description:
Your job is to handle support requests via our ticketing system and our new Q&A website, as well as make sure translations for software and documentation are up to date. This is a part-time contractor position starting in Q4 2012 and renewing quarterly.

We are looking for candidates who are fluent in one of Arabic, French, Mandarin, Burmese, Vietnamese, Spanish, and English. All must be fluent in English.

All candidates must:

- Be comfortable and experienced with interacting with users and developers online. – Be comfortable and experienced with translating technical documentation or explaining technical issues to users. – Be comfortable working remotely. – Be comfortable with transparency: as a non-profit, everything we do is in public, including your name (or at least your business name) and pay rate.

An ideal candidate would also:

- Be familiar with using Tor. – Be familiar with translating our software and documentation or providing support to Tor users. – Have basic familiarity with Trac, Request Tracker, or Transifex. – Genuinely be excited about Tor and our values. – Have experience with open-source software projects, including working with distributed teams across different time-zones containing employees and volunteers of differing skill levels over multiple mediums, including email, instant messaging, and IRC.

Other notes:

- Tor developers don’t have an office; you can work from wherever you want, in basically any country. You’ll need to be comfortable in this environment! We coordinate via IRC, email, and bug trackers. – Academic degrees are great, but not required if you have the right experience.

[Part-time] Translators: English to other languages at Panacea Supplies

Panacea Supplies is looking for translators to translate certain open source projects from English into other languages.

Which languages we need and at what times we need them vary. Right now we very much need people to translate from English to Turkish and English to Arabic. But we have needs for translators of other languages as well. We already have enough Spanish translators already, but all other languages are open.

We pay market rates per word for translations. What range we pay depends on various services – if we need to convert to a Word document on our end, that would be one rate, if you can do a translation of an XML file, we would pay higher.

Any portfolio of past translation work (open source or not) would be helpful to us in terms of any down payment on work.

Drop us a line with what your main language you can translate English into. So if you know Dutch and English well, drop us a quick line that you are an English to Dutch translator. We can then later talk about any portfolio you may have (not just in translation necessarily), what projects we have currently and coming down the line, market rates and so on.

We keep having projects come up so one project with us certainly may lead to more projects with us. We have a budget for translation work that is sitting out there unused for this year so far. So drop us a line what language your particular English->Your home language translations are.

The Open Internet Tools Project (OpenITP) seeks a part-time experienced software translator to translate Free and Open Source circumvention and privacy tools into Farsi. The ideal candidate will be tech-savvy, friendly, proficient in software translation, and an enthusiastic team player who works well without daily management. We are looking for a candidate with connections to or experience
working with existing online translation communities.

OpenITP supports and incubates a collection of free and open source projects that enable anonymous, secure, reliable, and unrestricted communication on the Internet. Its goal is to enable people to talk directly to each other without being censored, surveilled or restricted. OpenITP works to make its projects more accessible to both users and developers, building collaborative, sustainable tools that enhance whole categories of communication technology.

OpenITP operates out of New York and Washington, DC. Remote applicants are encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- Research free and open source projects. – Develop community of translators. – Interface with software developers to identify translation needs. – Facilitate communication with team members and projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will meet at least some of the following qualifications, though it is not necessary to meet all of them and we expect the Farsi Translator to learn new skills and grow while in the position:

- Fluency in Farsi and English. – Proficiency in other languages spoken in Iran and the region a plus (Azeri Turkish, Kurdish, Gilaki, Arabic). – A demonstrated interest in the values, mission and technologies supported by OpenITP. – Familiarity with software translation a plus (.po files, Transifex, Launchpad Translations, etc.). – Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. – Experience collaborating with wikis, IRC and distributed version control tools. – Ability to adapt to new tools, environments and tasks. – Familiarity with software translation a plus (.po files, Transifex, etc.). – Experience building Free and Open Source translation communities. – Technical knowledge of and experience with circumvention tools. – Experience translating mobile apps, especially in Androids a plus. – Experience with private communication software, especially GPG or PGP. – Excellent leadership, communication and teamwork skills.
